ITALY YOGA & FOOD RETREAT

WITH

CORRIE, HARRIET AND SAL

Sep 10th - 15th

2018

IMG_2678.jpg

Come and join us in idyllic Italy for a beautiful few days of restorative and dynamic body and mind focused yoga with Corrie and Harriet walking in nature, reading books in the olive grove and being treated to home cooked seasonal food, trips to local food markets and cooking workshops by award winning chef Sal, founder of Breadren.

We know the word "retreat" means different things to different people, you might want to spend time alone or with others, you might want to detox or maybe let your hair down, you might want to eat only vegetables or only chocolate.

With that in mind, we encourage you to join in with as many or as few of the activites as you wish. If you'd rather have a lie in than come to yoga, get cosy and enjoy catching those extra zzz's. But if you want even more activity, we are all available for reduced price 1:1 yoga and cooking sessions during the retreat.

THE YOGA AND WORKSHOPS

Yoga Practices

Love Your Body - The morning yoga asana sessions will be focused around connecting with and getting into your body, moving in ways that feel intuitive, learning how to approach productive tension whilst releasing residual tension and gaining confidence in conquering physical challenges. The classes will be suitable for all levels, with plenty of options for beginners and advanced practitioners alike.

Love Your Mind - The evening classes will be nourishing and restorative, making use of breathing exercises, meditation and gentle movements to ease out sore muscles, bring juice into joints and enable stillness to calm the mind. Optional activities will include yoga nidra, chanting and if the weather is fine walking meditation amongst the peace of the olive grove that surrounds the villa.

In-depth Yoga Workshops

Soft Strength - In this two hour workshop, you'll be invited to redefine your personal definition of strength, both physical and personal. Our aim is to show how strength is accessible and adaptable - to explore the strength and power that we all possess in unique ways. We'll consider how softness and ease are the perfect partners of strength, supporting us in a way that balances and complements our strong nature. You can expect a mix of yoga asana, mindfulness, movement practice and philosophy narrated by Harriet's characteristic warmth and attention to detail.

Finding Fluidity - Most of the physical focus in yoga classes is based around creating "good alignment" and in this two hour workshop we will challenge those ideas and see how we can safely push those boundaries to break away from linear movements and the heavy expectations of chasing perfect lines in bodies that naturally follow curves. Using a mixture of fluid, free flowing and releasing yoga sequences, we will also play with other movements inspired by dance, primal flows, Pilates and tai chi to expand out ideas of what "yoga" could mean and to chase what the body tells you it wants, rather than the mind.

Cooking Workshops

Lunch - The day before this workshop, we will take a trip to a local farmers market, where Sal will explain the importance of seasonal shopping and you will be encouraged to choose some ingredients which capture the best that Italy has to offer at this time of year. Back at the villa, we will take inspiration from the ingredients chosen to create a unique meal and Sal will guide the group through how best to prep and optimise flavour, alongside learning the art of seasoning and flavour pairing. Once we have finished preparing our own lunch, we will sit down to enjoy our feast!

Dinner - The villa has an extensive outside kitchen where we will make our own pizzas in the balmy evening breeze. You will learn about dough making, veg prep, herb and season balancing and how easy it can be to create your own delicious and nutritious pizza, which allows for any dietary requirements you might have.

THE VILLA

Olive Grove Haven

San Vincenzo Valle Roveto

The Villa is surrounded by mature trees and olive fields, the peace and quiet is staggering!

You will not only spend some quality time in a beautiful house in amazing surroundings, but you will have the chance to live in a traditional countryside villa from the past century, steeped in history and charm.

The villa lays in half a hectare of private gardens, where half of it is reserved exclusively for the guests of the villa. In this area you will find a beautifully situated outdoor pool and an extensive outdoor patio, where we will take all our yoga asana classes, gazing into the green rolling hills and lazy clouds.

Inside, the Villa is spread over three levels:

~Ground floor with a fully equipped kitchen (8 hobs, 2 ovens and a hot-plate); separate dining room that accommodates up to 16 people plus a seating area and a bathroom.

~First and second floors have a mixture of double and twin rooms, all decorated traditionally with high ceilings and spacious bathrooms.

THE AREA

San Vincenzo

Valle Roveto

Abruzzo, Italy

San Vincenzo superiore is a tiny sleepy medieval town nestled within the Simbruini mountains in Abruzzo. The town’s square and St Rocco’s church are perched on the slope right behind the villa.

In the surrounding area a number of medieval hamlets are spread along the Roveto valley; some of my favourites:

-Fossato di Sasso with an astonishingly well kept medieval Castle (Castello di Sasso Corbaro) 10min drive.
-Balsorano vecchio with the beautiful “Piccolomini Castle” 10min - drive
-Avezzano, a slightly bigger town with shops restaurants and a lot to see - 20min drive
-Isola del Liri, a beautiful town in the Lazion region - 20 min drive

THE FOOD

All of the food will be lovingly prepared by Sal, who is the head chef and founder of Breaden. She was trained at the renowned Leith's School of Food and Wine and she finds inspiration from her African and Indian heritage as well as her London roots to create flavours that are truly unique, seeing her win awards and gain a reputation for being a talented cuisinière.

She refers to her style of food as "inclusive eating" as she caters for those who want to live sugar free, vegan, dairy free and gluten free as well as those looking for more indulgent, classic treats. All too frequently free-from foods are lacking in the taste and texture categories and are often filled with processed alternatives and artificial sweeteners and flavourings. She lets the natural beauty of her ethically sourced, seasonal ingredients shine through, you have to taste it to believe it!

Corrie McCallum

My teaching style is fluid, inspired by my advanced anatomy and Osteopathy studies to create an intelligent, alignment based approach yet also being creative, inspired by the freedom of Scaravelli and my dance background. I back away from micromanaging my students, preferring to give just enough cues to empower them to find the best way for their unique bodies, but targeting the exact areas to open and contract, making my classes accessible and stealthily challenging! I guide students to practice from a place of mindful engagement, rather than creating more strain, tension and ego. You deserve to feel amazing.
